BBB Sponsors a Smarter, More Accessible Approach to Community Shredding

The Better Business Bureau of the Midwest Plains is redefining what a community shred event can be. In partnership with Russ’s Market and Shred Vault, the BBB is sponsoring Shred and Protect Month this montha free consumer shredding initiative in Lincoln, Nebraska, that replaces the limitations of traditional shred days with unmatched convenience and accessibility. 

Unlike conventional shred events that are limited to a single location and just a few hours, Shred and Protect Month empowers consumers to securely dispose of sensitive documents on their own schedule. Throughout the entire month, residents can use Shred Vault kiosks conveniently located inside all Lincoln Russ’s Market stores.  

“The Shred and Protect initiative is far more convenient and practical than the typical free shredding event,” said Thom Kastrup, Senior Vice President of the BBB Midwest Plains. “Instead of waiting to access free document destruction for just a few hours at a single location, consumers can simply use the Shred Vault kiosks at Lincoln-area Russ’s Market locations throughout the entire month.”  

The program reflects the BBB’s long‑standing commitment to consumer education and identity‑theft prevention. By offering a secure, widely accessible shredding solution, Shred and Protect Month aligns directly with the BBB’s mission to promote best practices for protecting personal and financial information.  

“Educating consumers and businesses has always been central to our mission,” Kastrup added. “We also have a long history of providing resources to combat identity theft. In fact, the BBB is second only to the Federal Trade Commission in collecting and sharing information related to these crimes.”  

Russ’s Market, a trusted local retailer with deep community roots, is sponsoring the initiative as part of its ongoing commitment to serving customers and neighbors beyond the grocery aisle.

Our customers are our neighbors, and we see it as both an obligation and a privilege to support programs that make their lives easier and more secure.” 

To further encourage participation, Russ’s Market will award five $100 gift cards each week during the event, selected at random from participating consumers.
