There was no fanfare when the unsuspecting customer recently deposited the 8,000th sealed Shred Vault® Bag into one of the company’s 21 kiosks currently deployed in Nebras
ka, Colorado, and Iowa. From their standpoint they were just another consumer confident that their personal information would be securely destroyed.
The event did not, however, go unnoticed by Shred Vault founder and CEO Brian Gubbels, who sees it as further validation that his intention to disrupt the secure media destruction industry was well on its way.
Gubbels’ journey in secure media destruction began in 2010, when he and his wife Shannon purchased DataShield, a 13-year-old, Omaha-based electronic recycling company. The Gubbels have since grown it to a regional leader for commercial shredding.
Gubbels recalls thinking from the onset that some type of innovation was needed.
“Even though we focused initially on learning and improving the operation,” Gubbels says, “it occurred to us that there was really no way to effectively differentiate our services. Everyone had the same certifications, used the same types of trucks and containers, and provided the same services.”
When asked why reaching the deposit benchmark is worth celebrating, Gubbels points to what it signifies about the future.
“To some degree, the number is arbitrary,” the CEO admits. “But that pace of consumer adoption, given the short time it’s been available and the limited promotion, hitting 8,000 deposits tells us deposits or even 800 million as we expand nationally and globally.”
